A woman who told her husband she thought she might have been raped during a drunken night out later discovered it was him who had carried out the sexual attack, a court heard.
The husband raped his wife at the family home as their children slept, after finding her lying on a bench in a drunken stupor, a jury heard.
The brazen 35-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, even told his wife she should call the police if she believed she had been raped.
But soon after, detectives arrested him after finding DNA evidence to show he was the rapist.
The husband was today jailed for seven years and ordered to sign the Sex Offenders' Register for life.
He was also made the subject of a restraining order, banning him from contacting his estranged wife other than through solicitors.
The victim, who attended court, had described in a statement read to the court by the judge how she felt betrayed by the one person in the world she trusted the most.
Judge Alexia Durran said: "She described the total and utter shock upon finding out the person responsible was you, her husband.
"Your marriage has broken down as a result and she had to move out of the home you shared together."
Defending, Daniel Bunting added: "It had a significant effect on her and she felt a significant amount of betrayal, by the person she described as the closest person to her."
The man was convicted of one count of rape by a majority jury verdict, whose members had heard that the pair had rowed on the way to a friend's barbecue.
The woman stormed off and spent the evening drinking at a local bar while the defendant went to the barbecue with his son.
Hours later at about 2am a member of the public called him to say his wife was slumped over a bench in a busy town centre.
The husband drove out to take her home but raped her when they arrived back at the family home, the jury had heard.
Sentencing the husband, Judge Durran said: "On November 27 the jury returned a majority verdict and convicted you of count one, raping your wife in your house on May 15 last year.
"I adjourned the case for sentencing until today to allow the victim to attended if she wishes.
"On May 14 of last year at around 7pm you and your wife argued - you were on your way to a friend's barbecue. Your wife stormed off and caught a bus to Reading town centre."
The judge said CCTV showed the woman had drunk a "considerable amount of alcohol" in a bar, and that by the time she left at 1am she was "completely intoxicated".
"In your evidence to the court and in your interview with police, you said she was very drunk, barely coherent and had trouble talking," added the judge.
She continued: "You drove her home and the inevitable conclusion of the jury was you then raped her while she was unable to consent, as a result of the alcohol she had consumed."
Judge Durran told the court that the victim could not remember what had happened but began to get suspicious when she woke up the next morning.
Fearing the worst, the victim told a close friend and also her husband that she thought she had been sexually assaulted.
The judge said: "In an unusual feature of this case she, having expressed her concerns to you, you told her to call the police if she felt she had been sexually assaulted."
